3-axis CNC machining


Suitable for basic CNC machining operations. Cutting tools can move along three axes (X, Y, Z)


 4-axis CNC machining


Due to its ability to rotate along a horizontal axis, it is suitable for complex machining. (i.e. increase the rotation axis (A-axis). 

 

3+2-axis CNC machining


The cutting tool moves simultaneously on three axes and rotates on two indexing rotation axes. However, switching from three axes to a rotating axis requires constant repositioning.

Cutting tools can move simultaneously along five axes. The 5-axis machine tool will move along three linear axes and two rotational axes.

How does 5 axis cnc machining work?

There are 4 steps to describe how 5 axis cnc machining works.

Get a CAD model ready

To get 5 axis cnc machining parts, a proper CAD(computer aided design) model is necessary.  there are some popular CAD software used by product designers or engineers for example: AutoCAD, SolidWorks.

In prototyping stage, product appearance, function, and manufacturing feasibility should be taken into consideration.  A good CAD drawing should show operating features like holes, threads, critical dimensions indicated with tolerances, etc,

Model be converted to CNC readable code

CNC machines can only understand codes. Some CAD software can transform the files into G code. In other cases, CAM(computer aided manufacturing) software is needed. Production engineer or mechanics uses CAM software to create machining tool path and other machining instructions for CAD models, and converts them into codes readable to cnc machines.

There are some CAD software with CAM functions, i.g: AutoCad, SolidWorks, Fusion360, NX/UG. Commonly used CAM sorftware, i.g. Mastercam.
